Since really getting into the Killjoyverse I can honestly say that Better Living Industries is one of the creepiest concepts that I’ve ever come across, and is both ingenious and horrifying at the same time. The whole idea of a set system that practically enslaves its citizens via brainwashing in order to remove all emotion and free thought is actually terrifying.
Granted, some may claim that its the pills and brainwashed society that keep the people in their sheep-like state, but the industry as a whole is what really creeps me out. From the Draculoids to the S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W/S maintaining order to everything being kept so pristine and perfect and monochrome, its like BLI’s agenda is to purify the world and make it ‘better’ by removing everything that makes us human.
Independence. Freedom of thought. Colour.
That’s why the Killjoys are so loathed by Better Living Industries; they represent everything that they hate. They’re loud and messy and colourful and completely unapologetic about it all, because they’ll be damned before they let BLI keep them quiet. That’s why Korse is so twistedly fascinated by the Fab Four – they represent everything that he and the rest of Better Living Industries had been programmed against, programmed to hate; rebellion, passion, freedom, danger.
There’s so many dramatic contrasts between BLI and the Killjoys – colour vs monochrome, silence vs noise, order vs chaos.
I dunno, I just get the creeps when I see those moodboards for BLI – all monochrome and pristine and making it out to be so calm and orderly when the reality is that behind those blank walls and empty smiles there’s a dark, brutal side to Better Living that they hide behind that infamous logo.
We’ve all seen what they do to those who defy them, who stand up against them – the fate of the Fab Four is just an example. Imagine the amount of Killjoy blood that’s been spilt just because they tried to make a stand and embrace their voices, their freedom.
It’s a wonder why Better Living’s name isn’t tinted with red.
